How to Clean Brass

There’s nothing more stylish than an old brass door knob or knocker, but nothing worse when they’re old and tarnished. To help keep brass looking good clean it regularly with a brass cleaner using steel wool. If it is very old and hasn’t seen any brass cleaner in a while, you may need to give it several applications.

A cheap and very effective alternative is to use a half a lemon that has been dipped in salt. Sounds silly, but it really works!

But before you start either of the above methods, check if the brass is real or if it in fact brass plated steel or iron. You can do this by using a magnet – if it sticks it isn’t real brass. You can still use the above methods but you will need to avoid using steel wool as it can scratch.
