Cooktop

Print this tip

You need to get tough when cleaning a cooktop. Having said that, you also need to be gentle, as they are generally made of enamel or easily scratched steel.

The best way to keep it clean is to not let it get dirty. That sounds an obvious thing to say, but if you always wipe down your stovetop after use you’ll be thankful later.

Hot water and a soft cloth are enough for day-to-day wipe overs (just rinse the cloth well), although you can use a general purpose cleaning spray if you want.

Any tougher burnt-on dirt will require a bit more elbow grease. Pour some bicarb on the offending area, the splash a little vinegar over it.

Leave it to fizz for a short while and then rub with a sponge – or even better, a microfibre cloth. Microfibre easily cuts through grease and grime and has amazing results on stainless steel surfaces. You may need to repeat the whole process for stubborn deposits.

Whenever you wipe down the cooktop, be sure to remember to do the same with the splashback. This will help stop greasy grime building up, especially on tiles.

If you have a build up of grime in the grout between the tiles in your splashback apply bicarb then vinegar using two sponges.

Let it fizz for a while, then gently scrub using an old toothbrush. With a really tough build up you may need to do this a second time.
